CerCap™ is a woman’s controlled contraceptive and HIV drug delivery device that provides protection against unwanted pregnancy and reduces the risk of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. It has the potential to change the future for disadvantaged women everywhere.
The design of CerCap originated from the development of proven female barrier contraceptive technologies, however, it is being enhanced to act as a drug-eluting device that can provide the dual benefits of contraception and prevention of HIV. CerMed has filed a patent for CerCap. The patent covers improvements in cervical cap design that provides a replaceable and/or integrated polymer ring for elution of compounds to prevent pregnancy and/or microbicides to inhibit HIV infection. The polymer ring is being designed to permit delivery of compounds such as levonorgestrel, a synthetic progesterone used in oral contraceptives, and Tenofovir, an antiretroviral agent approved for treatment of HIV. Future claims will include dispensing compounds for treatment of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and other common vaginal infections.
CerMed has developed relationships with several pharmaceutical companies that will provide the drugs (three in test at this time) for use in the CerCap device. In addition, we are working closely with several of the world’s leading researchers and experts on the development of drug eluting delivery systems.
